London calling! Uruguay presents two tastings to the London trade

In one of the largest shows of Uruguayan wine in the UK this year, Uruguay Wine hosted two special events on 19th September in the heart of Soho in London.

Some 15 wineries were presented to a dozen importers at a special tasting in the early afternoon, showcasing a diverse set of producers seeking representation in the UK market. Importers in attendance and tasting the wines included Enotria & Coe, Berkmann, Pampas, Condor Wines, Propeller, Corney & Barrow, Vinals, The Shopper, Viva Vino, Hispamerchants, Whisky Exchange, Go Brazil and Ucopia Wines, ranging from smaller specialists in South American wine to some of the largest importers in the UK market.

Hosted at Negroni’s, an up-and-coming eatery in Soho, there was also an evening event in which press and trade were invited to a special wine paired dinner to discover the wines of Uruguay. Four flights of wines included 15 wineries and a selection of new wave Uruguay, coastal white wines, light red wines, and a final flight of Tannat wines.

Attendees included some of London’s top sommeliers including Maria Boupa of Terra, Merlin Ramos of Humo, Jiachen Lu of Dinings SW3 and Stefan Neuman MS, as well as journalists and buyers at restaurants and wine bars. A casual masterclass over dinner was held by Amanda Barnes, leading South America wine journalist and author of The South America Wine Guide.

“It was such an interesting and delicious Uruguay wine dinner,” said Benjamin Gubbins, from Vagabond wine bars. “The wines were really good all round, with perfect food to match. It was an eye-opening experience to the quality of Uruguay.”
